Does Connecticut Offer Free Home Energy Audits?

Updated: Jan 24

(As of December 2025)

Yes, Connecticut does offer free home energy audits for many residents—thanks to the Energize Connecticut program (funded by a small charge on your utility bills).

Here's the current breakdown:

Free for Home Energy Audits for Income-Eligible Households

  • If your household income is below 60% of the state median (for 2025–2026, that's roughly $60,000–$90,000 for a family of four, depending on size), you qualify for the Home Energy Solutions – Income Eligible (HES-IE) program.

  • This provides a no-cost in-home energy assessment plus immediate energy-saving measures (air sealing, LED bulbs, low-flow showerheads, etc.) and deeper incentives for insulation, windows, heat pumps, and more.

  • The average home receives about $850 in services and saves $180+ per year on bills.

Low-Cost or Occasionally Free for Everyone Else

  • For non-income-eligible customers (most homeowners), the standard Home Energy Solutions (HES) assessment costs a subsidized $75 co-pay.

  • However, the $75 fee is often waived during promotional periods (e.g., limited-time offers in 2025 for scheduling by certain dates) or through local town partnerships.

  • The assessment is still a huge value: technicians perform blower-door tests, infrared scans, and safety checks, install free items, and provide a customized plan—worth $800–$1,000 on average.

Who Can Participate?

  • Customers of Eversource, United Illuminating (UI), Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), or Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG) are eligible.

  • Homes must not have received a similar assessment in the last 6 years.

  • Renters can participate too (with landlord approval for deeper work).

How to Get Started

Call 877-WISE-USE (877-947-3873) or visit energizect.com to check eligibility and schedule. The process is quick, and the assessment usually takes 2–3 hours.

Bottom line: If your income qualifies, the audit is completely free. If not, it's only $75 (sometimes waived) and almost always pays for itself quickly through lower bills and rebates. In Connecticut's high-energy-cost climate, it's one of the smartest moves you can make.
