About Well Inspections

  • Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas. It is a noble gas, chemically inert, and formed as part of the radioactive decay chain of uranium-238, a common element in the Earth's crust.

  • Radon originates from the natural decay of uranium in soil, rock, and groundwater. As uranium breaks down, it produces radium, which further decays into radon gas. This gas escapes from the ground into the air and can seep into homes through:

    • Cracks in foundations or walls

    • Gaps around pipes or cables

    • Sump pits or crawl spaces

    • Joints in construction materials

  • Due to bedrock rich in uranium like granite and shale CT produces more radon gas than other regions of the country. Regions like the Northeast, including Connecticut, often have higher radon levels than states with less uranium-rich soil, such as parts of the South or West.

  • Once inhaled, radon decays into tiny radioactive particles (like polonium-218 and -214). These particles lodge in the lungs, emitting alpha radiation that damages DNA in lung cells, increasing the risk of lung cancer.
